In the aftermath of the 1917 revolution, all Russian vodka manufactures were shut down. Luckily, the Smirnoff recipes and name were purchased by Rudolf Kunett and he started a distillery in Bethel, Connecticut in 1933. The president of Heublein Inc., John Gilbert Martin entered into a business agreement with Kunett to back the brand and production started in 1939. The company was sold several times. The company, Diageo currently owns the Smirnoff vodka brand.
